Computing - (3) Installing Windows 8.1 for dual-booting with Lubuntu
This article continues on from the previous one, Computing - (2) Partitioning a 1 TB hard disk with the GParted USB drive for dual booting Lubuntu and Windows.

Warning : OS Installation operations should be performed also with a great care as a little mistake could lead to a complete clear up of the whole data on the target disk! You(the reader of this article) have been warned!

Previously, we've created a new GPT partition table and desired partitions in it with a GParted USB stick.
Now here do we install Windows 8.1, 10 or 7 if needs be, on the 1st non-EFI partition in the 1 TB(Terra Bytes) hard disk.

Order Type Kind File System Size (GB) Reigning OS
1 EFI System (boot, esp) Primary FAT32 1 *
2 Normal Primary NTFS 160 Windows OS
3 Normal Primary NTFS 570 Windows Data
4 Normal Primary ext4 96 Linux OS
5 Normal Primary ext4 104 Linux Data

The Procedure :

The OS install procedure begins after creating a bootable Windows 8.1 installer USB stick.

Prerequisites :

  1. USB Memory stick of 6 GB or more in memory size.
  2. ISO image file of Windows 8.1 or equivalent OS (10 or 7) 64-bit
Note : The OS architecture should be of 64-bit for UEFI systems.
32-bit OSes are appropriate for MBR partition systems.
  3. Rufus v3.5. Rufus homepage >> here
  4. The fore-partitioned 1TB hard disk
  5. UEFI-available main board

Specifics :

  1. Run Rufus and choose the right target USB memory stick for OS installer creation from [Device] field of Rufus screen.
  2. Choose the OS iso mage file :

Then all the remaining fields are automatically filled out.
  3. Check if required fields are all correct for UEFI system :
    • Partition Scheme : GPT
    • Target system : UEFI (non CSM)
    • FILE system : NTFS

Then click [START] to create the OS installer.
  4. Click [CLOSE] to finish it up when [READY] message appears as shown below :
  5. Now reboot PC then bring up the boot device selection screen by pressing [F12] or whatever the key assigned for the task by the main board vendor :

Then choose the newly created USB stick with the UEFI... label as shown above and press [Enter] on the keyboard to boot up with the installer USB stick.

  6. Windows install screen appears. Choose appropriate field items then click [Next] to proceed :

  7. Click [Install Now] or [今すぐインストール] to proceed :

  8. Choose [Custom:Install Windows only (advanced)] for our scheduled scheme :

  9. Choose Drive 0 Partition 2 160.0 GB item from the partitions list displayed as shown below.
The drive number (0) may well differ from user to user as their number of disks attached to the system may well differ. But for systems with only a single physical drive the number should be zero.

Thus it could be 1, 2 or 3 depending on the user's system.

The 1st partition should not be chosen no matter what for OS install. It mainly manages boot-related settings and basic UEFI input/output stuff :

Click [Format] to clear up the chosen partition (it takes just several seconds:quick format). Without this format task, at times but seldom, there could be an occasion that an empty 'Windows.old' folder being created on the target partition after the OS install, even though no Windows has been on the target partition.

    Then click [Next] to proceed.

  10. When the following Windows setup screen appears, just wait for its finish :
  11. Input name of the PC for the installed OS :

    Then [Next].
  12. Click rather [Customize] than letting it proceed with its Express Settings :
  13. Choose an appropriate one as the user sees fit for his or her current network status :

As the PC is connected to the Internet direct via a service provider, the user in the above illustration chooses [No] for security's sake at the moment.
  14. After several more settings screens,

an online MS network account sign-in/creation screen appears, in case the current PC is connected to the Internet :

Just clicking [Next] does not work here but a message string asking for the name and password appears in yellow color, instead.

We have to click Create a new account once here even if we do not intend to create one.

  15. Then on the next detailed account creation screen, just click Sign in without a Microsoft account.
  16. Then the following off-line sign in screen appears :

Let's fill out all the fields then click [Finish] to round up the install procedures.
  17. Voila!
Windows 8.1 Start screen appears at last :

And its initial Desktop looks like the following :

Job Done !
Enjoy Windows 8.1 ...
